General Guinea Pig Statistic

Present day guinea pigs originated at least 3000 years ago in South America.

Guinea pigs were brought to Europe in the 16th century.

On average guinea pigs can live to 5 years, there are exceptions to this with some living longer and others shorter lives. Potential life span is 6-7 years.

Desirable environmental temperature range:

The ideal age for the female guinea pig to start breeding is at least 20 weeks of age and before 1 year old.

The guinea pig can produce, on average, 3 young. Litters can be between 1or 6, sometimes more.

Guinea pigs can measure 20-40.5cms in length. Some wild guinea pigs can be as long as a meter.

Vitamin C Deficiency
|
Guinea pigs cannot manufacture vitamin C and must receive an adequate supply of it from outside food sources. Vitamin C deficiency results in scurvy, which is characterised by inappetence, swollen, painful joints a ribs, reluctance to move, poor bone and teeth development and spontaneous bleeding from the gums and into muscle. |
